as director of central intelligence. there have been a lot of questions about how the f.b.i. came to uncover that affair through an investigation of e-mails so we asked bob orr in washington tonight to piece together everything we know. bob? >> reporter: good evening, scott. the four-month investigation by the f.b.i. was wrapped up just days before the election. in the end, agents did not find any evidence of an intelligence breach. instead they uncovered the tawdry personal affair that brought down c.i.a. chief david petraeus. it started as a low-level cyber investigation in tampa, florida. jill kelley, a socialite, who's done fund-raising for the u.s. military, told a friend in the f.b.i. that she'd received a series of anonymous harassing e-mails. agents quickly traced those e-mails to a former military intelligence officer paula broadwell, the author of the biography "all in. the education of general david petraeus." a further investigation turned up numerous e-mails, some of them sexually explicit between broadwell and petraeus at first blush, investigators wondered if someone breached
and kelly pentagon and fbi officials described them as potentially inappropriate and flirtatious. another says they were more than innocent exchanges noting the pentagon as inspector general is involved for a reason. kelly was seen inside her home tuesday. she was watching coverage of the scandal on tv. over the weekend she made calls to 911 to complain about the journalists. >> this is jill kelly, i have a guy whose in my backyard and he's not leaving. >> reporter:hey deny having an affair or any physical relationship. still the emails could cost allen his career if the inspector general determines those exchanges violate the uniform code of military justice. top officials from the fbi and cia again are briefing members of congress today on details about the scandal. and we're told fbi director bob mueller has a face to face meeting with the diane feinstein from senate. >> richard myer is a news senior military. general myers good morning. i begin with this question, what do you read into the fact that the secretary of defense and the president's spokesman, even nato is warning us not to
leaders besides general john allen. meanwhile the fbi agent frederick humphries who launched the investigation of emails is being investigated by the fbi for his role in the case. specifically why he took concerns about this case to republican members of congress. house and senate panels are expected to meet again today with fbi and cia officials. they want to know whether national security was jeopardized and why congress didn't know about the investigation sooner. during a news conference on wednesday president obama praised david petraeus. >> general petraeus had an extraordinary career. he served this country with great distinction in iraq, in afghanistan and as head of the cia. by his own assessment he did not meet the standards that he felt were necessary a the director of the cia with respect to this personal matter that he's now dealing with, with his family and with his wife. and it's on that basis that he tendered his resignation and i accepted. >> they are looking into the handling of the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. tomorrow they will hear from david
-old jill kelley complained to a friend, an fbi agent. that would be this person here, that she was receiving threatening e-mails, reportedly from broadwell launching an investigation, and that put the lid on this. general john allen, a top commander in afghanistan, the man who took petraeus' place is now being investigated. seems when the fbi was looking into those e-mails, they also found 20 to 30,000 pages of back and forth between jill kelley and allen. some say they're potentially inappropriate, maybe even crossing the line. some say that other than a dear or a sweetheart, there's nothing going on. in another twist, remember that fbi agent, the one who started looking into the threatening e- mails? he's apparently now being investigated for sending shirtless pictures via e-mail over to kelley. he's now off the case. this is jill kelley's twin sister. what does she have to do with it? she's going through a nasty custody battle right now and allegedly both petraeus and allen wrote letters on her behalf. full circle, back to broadwell. fbi agents did a search of her north caro

that story. >> reporter: good morning. fbi officials have told us that their investigation into this whole scandal which brought down david petraeus so far has not turned up any threat or damage to national security. since the affair with paula broadwell occurred while petraeus was the director of the central intelligence agency, the cia's inspector general has begun his own investigation. sources say the cia is looking into the general conduct of petraeus over the 4 months he headed the agency. officials say the probe is exploratory and doesn't presuppose any particular outcome. but the attorney general wants to make sure he didn't misuse any agency assets in his affair with broadwell. for the first time thursday attorney general eric holder defended the justice department's handling of the fbi summer long investigation of the broadwell/petraeus matter. holder was asked specifically about the fbi's decision to delay notifying the white house until after the election. >> we felt secure in the knowledge that a national security threat did not exist that warranted the sharing of that informa
